Crackdown: PFA shuts three confectionaries, issues 36 warning notices and imposes heavy fines on 12 out of 59 sweet production units


The Punjab Food Authority (PFA) has sealed three confectionaries and imposed heavy fines on 12 food business operators while carrying out a province-wide operation against sweets production units here on Monday.

The operation was held on the directions of PFA Director General (R) Captain Muhammad Usman. Food Safety teams visited 59 production units to inspect the quality of sweets, hygiene and food safety standards.

Muhammad Usman said that PFA has sealed production units for violating the rules of provincial food law. He said that substandard artificial flavours, loose colour, and inferior quality ghee were being used in the preparation of sweets. The use of substandard sweets is not good for health and causes of diseases. He said that teams have witnessed hygiene issues, the presence of washrooms in production areas, uncovered dustbins and abundance of insects. He further informed that sweet shops were also doing business without getting medical certificates from provincial food regulatory body.

Food safety teams visited 31 confectionaries in Lahore Region, 17 in Rawalpindi and 11 sweet shops in Multan Region besides of other food businesses. DG said that food safety officers issued notices for improvement to 36 sweet production units out of 59. He said that most of the food business operators are following the Punjab pure food regulation and producing standard food which is a good gesture of change in society and food industry. He said that the purpose of the food industry checking is to bring reforms and guide them concerning food safety standards along with to ensure the provision of quality food. He said that food business operators can get benefit from the consultancy service of PFA, he added.
