DG PFA chairs meeting to review salt iodization


The Punjab Food Authority Director General Irfan Memon has directed its operations teams to check the salt process units across Punjab to ensure the right amount of iodine in salt.

In this connection, Irfan Memon on Wednesday chaired a meeting to review salt iodization at PFA Headquarter. Meanwhile, a delegation of National Fortification Alliance has given a detailed briefing on it. The director general said that teams would conduct tests on the spot to check the amount of iodine, while samples of any unit should be sent to the laboratory for further analysis if needed. He said that strict action would be taken against the salt process units in case of failed their samples or not to include iodine in salt. He further said that iodine deficiency leads to neck and brain diseases but we can control it to ensure the addition of iodine in the salt as per law. Irfan added that the lack of vitamins or minerals can be met by adding all the essential nutrients to the diet. The Punjab Food Authority is doing work to add all the essential nutrients to the diet through the food fortification process, he added.
